How one pig
could have changed American history

One of the America's most unusual wars involved only one casualty -- a pig -- and yet it could have changed the course of history. The bizarre conflict took place on present-day San Juan Island (in Washington state) and involved American and British troops, and even warships.

The Pig War began on June 15, 1859, when an American settler named Lyman Cutlar shot and killed a trespassing pig belonging to Englishman Charles Griffin of the Hudson Bay Company. "It was eating my potatoes," said Cutlar, who had already warned Griffin to keep his pig out his potato patch. "It is up to you to keep your potatoes out of my pig," was Griffin's reply.

Normally, the shooting of a pig would be a small matter, but American and British tempers were short in those days. Both the United States and England claimed the San Juan Islands; ill-defined boundary lines were to blame.

When British authorities threatened to arrest pig-killer Cutlar, his fellow Americans called for U.S. military protection...

CLACKAMAS, Ore. - A man let his middle finger fly against sheriff's deputies and now his one-finger protest has led to a lawsuit against the Clackamas County Sheriff's Department.

Robert Ekas admits that he flipped the bird to two sheriff's deputies on the road and said one deputy that he gave the finger to three times responded by pulling him over and writing two tickets.

Ekas has filed a lawsuit against the sheriff's department, claiming deputies are trying to "retaliate against and chill citizens' First Amendment free speech rights."

"It's not really a free speech issue," said Ekas. "It's a right to dissent issue. It's a right for every citizen to say I don't like the way things are going so I'm not going to go along with the program."

The attorney for the sheriff's department said he cannot comment because this is an ongoing legal case.

Last year, a Pittsburgh man won a $50,000 settlement after being cited for flipping off an officer. Ekas said that lawsuit inspired him to file this one.

"Hooverville" became a common term for shacktowns and homeless encampments during the Great Depression. There were dozens in the state of Washington, hundreds throughout the country, each testifying to the housing crisis that accompanied the employment crisis of the early 1930s.

"Hooverville" was a deliberately politicized label, coined and used to emphasize that President Herbert Hoover and the Republican Party were held to be responsible for the economic crisis and its miseries.

Seattle's main Hooverville was one of the largest, longest-lasting, and best documented in the nation. It stood for ten years, 1931 to 1941.

Covering nine acres of public land, it housed a population of up to 1,200, claimed its own community government including an unofficial mayor, and enjoyed the protection of leftwing groups and sympathetic public officials until the land was needed for shipping facilities on the eve of World War II.

Homelessness followed quickly from joblessness once the economy began to crumble in the early 1930s....

Decrying officeholders who seemed to enjoy life tenure, he believed Government duties could be "so plain and simple" that offices should rotate among deserving applicants.

As national politics polarized around Jackson and his opposition, two parties grew out of the old Republican Party--the Democratic Republicans, or Democrats, adhering to Jackson; and the National Republicans, or Whigs, opposing him.

Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and other Whig leaders proclaimed themselves defenders of popular liberties against the usurpation of Jackson. Hostile cartoonists portrayed him as King Andrew I.

Behind their accusations lay the fact that Jackson, unlike previous Presidents, did not defer to Congress in policy-making but used his power of the veto and his party leadership to assume command.

The greatest party battle centered around the Second Bank of the United States, a private corporation but virtually a Government-sponsored monopoly. When Jackson appeared hostile toward it, the Bank threw its power against him.

April was a bloody month in the second year, 1891, of Washington's statehood. In the early hours of April 11, a mob of forty masked men arrived by boats at the oyster harvesting town of Oysterville, along the coast of southwest Washington.  The mob, after seizing a guard, entered the jail and fired into the cells that held John Rose and John Edwards, killing them.  The band of forty then departed in their boats into Shoalwater (now called Willapa) Bay.  Rose, a hotel proprietor and land speculator, and Edwards, a cook in Rose's hotel, had been convicted of killing Hans Frederickson and his wife, homesteading Danish immigrants, and burying their bodies in a cowpath and pigpen, after a land dispute.  Their conviction in Pacific County and sentence to hang the previous November had been reversed by the Washington State Supreme Court, which had ordered a new trial on the grounds that the evidence that had convicted the men was "the uncorroborated testimony of an accomplice" and that prejudiced...

The www.DailyRecordNews.com redesign is a culmination of months of hard work by a number of employees throughout the Daily Record company.

Its intent is to make the paper's already strong online presence even stronger and more user friendly.

The paper's staff is aware that its readers will detect some glitches in the product as we execute the change. If you are experiencing difficulties or would like to suggest improvements please e-mail our webmaster.

To clear up some confusion, you do not need to pay to be able to post story comments at www.DailyRecordNews.com. Yes. It's too early to predict disaster, but if not 2010 maybe 2011 or 2012. And none of the elected politicians with responsibility in this county seem to be sensing any need for action, or even preparation. It's politics as usual. While state and federal agencies have studied the Yakima River Basin nearly to death, very little action has actually occurred despite overwhelming  evidence that additional water storage has been needed for decades, that water has been over-appropriated, and that this need has grown exponentially.

What is at stake is the livelihood of thousands of residents who depend on agriculture and ag-related businesses. The efforts that have been spent on fish recovery and recreation-based businesses are also very much at risk. Declining snowpack and resultant surface water loss increases the threat of wildfires. Living things in the basin become stressed and many die. You know all this already. Then why hasn't there been any action?

The federal agency controlling water flow on the Yakima...

I have reviewed a number of documents in the city of Kittitas recently and  I must say there are a number of troubling issues that have come to light.  First it was mentioned more than once in here but this is troubling for the city of Kittitas.  A city employee recieved a pay raise without council approval as per the official minutes of the city of Kittitas.  Then again this last year the same employee recieved another pay raise without council approval.  A contract with the Union specifically stated it did not represent 3 specific positions.  However the Union stated a salary they felt a position should recieve and that individual recieved the raise.  Again no council approval no contract negotiations to add the individual to the union just a mayor abusing his powers in my opinion.  Then the same position recieved an additional raise stating it was in the union contract but again this position under the contract the city was operating under with the union did not cover...

Grand Jury Impaneled To Probe County Sheriff Accused Of Abusing Power

The Department of Justice has impaneled a grand jury to look into allegations of abuse of power by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, according to subpoenas sent to at least two county officials.
Maricopa County Manager David Smith and County Budget Director Sandi Wilson both said they had been subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury next week to testify about their interactions with the Sheriff's Office. Federal officials have been investigating whether Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his office are using their power to retaliate against critics -- a subject at the center of a recent 5 Investigates report. At the time, several people -- including Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon -- confirmed they had spoken with the FBI about the subject. "The Sheriff's Office starts an investigation and goes looking for a crime," said Smith. "Most agencies see a crime then start an investigation."

The Sheriff's Office launched criminal investigations into...

The past year was interesting with the collapse of the real estate market and ensuing financial problems for our local governments.  The story though is still continuing.  For Twenty-Ten what do you think might happen?

Suncadia will go into receivership/bankruptcy with more layoffs

One of the Upper County Cities or Ellensburg will report by July they are having budget problems and lay offs or pay cuts will be in order.

Teanaway Solar Reserve will announce the project isnt feasable or they have selected a new location.

The Teanaway development will be resolved/property sold or owner will drop development plans.

All the school district levies will pass

Sapphire Skies will drop their "900 house" City Heights development.  They might not this year but it still seems pretty far fetched.

This is mostly Upper County stuff but feel free to add your own.  Interesting to see in the coming year what happens.

There may never be another time in modern history for Yakima River Basin water users to collectively endorse a plan that meets all current and future water needs. What is at stake is whether this group, the Yakima Basin Water Enhancement Project, can all agree on a single plan. Without it, federal and state agencies will not be able to put forth a single effort to protect and enhance fish, to alleviate crippling droughts that hurt area farmers and ranchers, and to ensure local communities get enough water to prosper and grow.

A successful outcome of the Arboretum Talks could be the single most important event affecting the lives of citizens in Kittitas, Yakima, and Benton Counties for decades.  The plan includes additional water storage, improved fish habitat, irrigation upgrades and more. Key proponents of the plan, Reclamation, Ecology, the Yakama Nation, and irrigation managers all agree. What is holding the plan up are, yes, County Commissioners. Without an endorsement from the commissioners from the...

Hi, all:

Here's a news release we just sent out from the Department of Ecology ...

Ecology issues burn ban for Kittitas County

OLYMPIA – The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) is issuing a burn ban in Kittitas County because of worsening air quality.

Ecology’s Stage 1 burn ban for Kittitas County is effective immediately and will continue until at least 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 21. The Stage 1 ban applies to unnecessary use of uncertified wood stoves, inserts and fireplaces, and to all outdoor burning.

Smoke from outdoor burning, wood stoves and fireplaces is likely to build up where cold air is trapped near the ground. People can easily breathe fine particles in smoke deep into their lungs, where the particles can damage sensitive tissues.

For updates, check local media reports, Ecology’s daily burn decision hotline (1-800-406-5322) and www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/air/outdoor_woodsmoke/burn_ban.htm.

Under a Stage 1 ban:

  • Use of fireplaces, uncertified wood stoves and uncertified inserts is prohibited unless they...

I have had the worst time trying to find a job in this town.  What is the secret?  I have two degrees from Central and plenty of experience in a variety of fields.  When I apply the job seems already gone.  Safeway for example had dozens of jobs advertised on there website.  I applied and went down their several times.  I was told to come back several times and finally they told me the jobs were all filled.  Why did they bother to tell me to come back.  Later I realized that they seemed to have hired only college age students.  I am forty something and have retail experience.  I was schock that I was not even considered for an interview.  Whats the deal?  I am convinced that the only way to get a job in this town is if you know someone in the buisiness or you were born here and have a significant last name.

...or (D), all of the above?

Until summer, Bob Hansen was on the Board of Directors for the Ellensburg Chamber of Commerce, where as past President, Ron Cridlebaugh worked for him. He is also on the Board of Directors for the Economic Development Group (the EDG) of Kittitas County, where (you guessed it!) Ron Cridlebaugh now works for him.

When Cridlebaugh's replacement left the Chamber, who do you think the Board of Directors (who then included Hansen) hired? That would be Bob Hansen. And when Cridlebaugh needed to lease building space managed by Cridlebaugh's organization, who do you think Cridlebaugh hired to do the leasing? That would also be Bob Hansen. Not to murky things any further, but Cridlebaugh is now on the Board of the Chamber, so he is now supervising Hansen.

In most organizations, individual members of a Board of Directors are flat-out not allowed to profit from an action of that board. Apparently, this is not the case for Mr. Hansen.

Now please don't tell me you are still wondering why no meaningful...
