Questions about DR Web site

The www.DailyRecordNews.com redesign is a culmination of months of hard work by a number of employees throughout the Daily Record company.

Its intent is to make the paper's already strong online presence even stronger and more user friendly.

The paper's staff is aware that its readers will detect some glitches in the product as we execute the change. If you are experiencing difficulties or would like to suggest improvements please e-mail our webmaster.

To clear up some confusion, you do not need to pay to be able to post story comments at www.DailyRecordNews.com. That was just one of the issues the paper's technicians had to work out as they migrated content from the paper's previous Web site to its new site. You do, however, have to register — FOR FREE — to be able to comment on stories ... just as you do here.

The VIP registration on www.DailyRecordNews.com is to allow full access to the complete print version of the paper via PDFs. Only about 20 percent of the paper's content is ever posted to the paper's free Web site.

It Worked. byAureliux5 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Actually managed to get the registration to really work with the news comments.

NOW can we please get the brief summary of the last 4 comments from KVTalks back on the front page?

Thank You,

A.

So... Is the little display with the last four posted comments never going to come back to the web page on the news site?

Has anyone else ever tried finding some kind of client server software which will read the forums as a news group, download the discussions, and upload replies? It kind of appears as though Thunderbird and a few others might do that, so I was wondering.

Hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine. Was out in an orchard yesterday and noticed the cherry trees are about to explode in bloom. And it's too early.

Happy Friday, everybody,

A.

The Daily Record launched its new free content Web site on Feb. 11 and its staff is still working through some of the new features in order to optimize the site's capabilities.

We would appreciate any feedback you might be able to give that will help us make the new site better meet our customers' needs.

Looks like it's getting there... byAureliux5 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Thank you, Ingmar. Looks like some things are starting to appear again. Think the "Letters to the Editor" came on as HEADLINES this AM, and one comment from KV Talks was there.

Letters to the Editor, Web Front Page... byAureliux5 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
OK, I registered and that worked, it was accepted. Tried a post on the Letters to the Editor and got the message about how it would be posted momentarily but it hasn't come up yet.

Interesting how that has a delay function, but this doesn't and now both are appearing on the front page of the web site?

Just thought I'd comment. Had the same problem before with the Letters to the Editor. I'd write, would get that waiting message, and it'd never come up.

I wonder what the problem could be. I've had all but one of my comments posted. I almost suspected the format was changed so the BOCC would not have to endure all the negative posts they were getting. :-)
I've noticed fewer comments since the switch over. If true that there were people arguing with themselves I guess registering will limit that behavior. Hopefully we'll get back to the lively discussiions when everyone gets used to the new format.

It may take a bit to build back up the participation but we are beginning to get more registered users and more comments.
How's the new DR web site working out? bywhatatrip4 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Unless I am missing something it doesn't look like the new look is generating nearly the amount of activity the old web site generated. Are there still a lot of technical difficulties to work out or am I not going to the right places. Letters to the editor and responses are at pretty quiet.
RE: How's the new DR web site working out? bymoderate4 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse)
Agreed, I used to enjoy the spirited discussions that took place. Been very quiet since the new site was put up. Although I've noticed that Garry seems to have figured it out;-)
RE: How's the new DR web site working out? byIngmar4 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
As far as we can tell the system is working. There has been some reluctance from people not wanting to register, but user registration has picked up dramatically. The registration requirement has helped us avoid several problems including instances of one user arguing with themselves or agreeing with themselves and making it look like there were more people involved the discussions.
RE: How's the new DR web site working out? byCleElum14 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
I'm not sure I understand how registering makes any differences since name, address, and so on could be as made up as the username or borrowed from someone else, ie aunt so-n-so or uncle whatever, without them even knowing it. How many of us don't have different usernames for different sites and multiple e-mail addresses?
RE: How's the new DR web site working out? byClem4 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse)
I actually dont mind the idea of a "sock puppet" or someone argueing with themselves. I remember one instance that was pretty funny. Some of the posts are "sarcasm" meant to elicit a respone or not.
RE: How's the new DR web site working out? bymoonlightmile4 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse)
I think there would be more activity if the number of comments made on the "most popular news stories" listed on the right lower side of the front page were shown.
RE: How's the new DR web site working out? bywhatatrip4 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse)
And there have been numerous guest columns but the last one listed on the guest column page is dated 2/2/2010.

It is also true the list of stories is a very short list.
bymoderate4 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Would also be nice if comments were dated. Right now the comments on news stories are not.
Dating the Comments, New Site Discussion... byAureliux4 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Yes, it would be nice to have a day/date/time stamp on the comments instead of how many hours have passed since it was posted.

Everything else seems to be working.

The Sock Puppet? Multiple access through several aliases? Yes, it can still be done. I'm sure that there is an ISP log on the KV site that would show multiple hits from several identities coming from the same ISP address ID. SO there is no real safety in hiding behind multiple email addresses, either, IF the system administrator wanted to track down an abusive user.

AND I know there is a way to mask and create different return path ways. But there are ways to penetrate that little trick, too, if someone really needs to track down a naughty little poster.

I will ask again... bymoonlightmile4 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Is it possible to post the number of comments beside the headlines listed under 'most popular stories' shown on the front page?
unable to access bycountrygirl114 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Forget trying to register and all the other problem, I can't even get the DR web site to open. My computer freezes up and the message in the box says 'program is not responding' and so I just click on the 'end task' option. This has been going on for ten days. I am on dial-up and maybe that is the problem. I sure do miss the lively exchange of comments.
RE: unable to access byAureliux4 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
Has Been Problems, was some kind of DNS error with something hosted in Montana if my check of the system came back through OK.

I've noticed a BIG difference in how it loads if I use Seamonkey, MSIE, or Opera. Seems to like MSIE better. Suppose I could try a couple other browsers out that I haven't dusted off in a while and see what happens.

But yes, this site has been twitchy and unreliable a few times. Seems like someone must be aware of it, getting the error logs ect. and getting things solved.

Hard to sit still in front of a PC while life is starting to bloom outside. Saw my first batch of little fresh born piggies last week. Awesome sight, bright pink little whirling mass of nosey confusion with spinning little tails. Wish I could have taken their pictures. Their mother was as big as a bull dozer and probably did not have a sense of humor about people with cameras.

It's awesome outside.

I also tried to e-mail the webmaster at the address provided. It came back undelieverable. failure. recipiant refuses to accept.
Being PC challenged I can't even attempt a different browser - at least I know what a browser is. And yes, it has been way too nice to be sitting at the 'puter.
RE: fialure byAureliux4 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
Probably should not be too concerned about switching browsers now that it appears that all the kinks have been ironed out of MSIE. Or so they say.
I have tried just about all of them. Seamonkey has been my favorite for a while. BUT that is just because it combines Fire Fox with something just like Thunderbird for a good email client server program.
Opera was, I think, the first one that would do multiple tabbed browsing which is rather special. I could get up a dozen sites at once, go get my coffee in the AM, and sometimes they'd refresh from the last viewing so I'd get the new stuff without having to punch another button or two.
SHOULD be a way to align and configure a program to download the forums and allow a registered user to upload new topics and reply to posts. I have asked about it before and no one got around to answering it. Pretty sure there is a way to make Thunderbird do it.

Things aren't working again byAureliux4 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Can't log in to reply to stories on the main page. Says my log in is incorrect AND that I haven't enabled milk and cookies. Worked fine this AM, and last night, and I haven't changed any settings.

KV Talks is missing off the web page again and I could not access it through the preferences bar on top.

Other than that, life is good? Got in via the KVTalks.Com page.

ANYONE going to answer me on setting up a news group client program to work on this site, like an email client ie Thunderbird?

ANYONE else using or have managed to figure out how to set this up to work through Outlook, or WindWoes Live?

A.
RE: Things aren't working again bymoonlightmile4 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
I'm almost ready to give up on this site. And as far as waiting to get an answer? The line has already formed.
RE: Things aren't working again bycountrygirl113 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse)
I access the the KVtalks by www.kvtaks.com. Gave up on the DR site. The GOP in Kittitas County enjoys their forum in the print version of the paper. There is no lively public decussion of their opinion.
RE: Things aren't working again byAureliux3 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse)
All the answers must be in the extended spring break holding pattern and once that is over I'm sure we'll be deluged with progressive positively related replies and suggestions.

Losing patience bymoderate3 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Miss the discussion that used to occur here. Didn't often post but was interested in the comments of others. Now all we have is a forum for Gerry to post his thoughts.
RE: Losing patience byAureliux3 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse)
Well... We COULD all take turns reporting each other for forum abuse. Maybe THEN someone would read and respond to what we are asking about in here.

And yes, you all know it's getting pretty bad when I get caught going in there, reading the cut and pastes, and actually responding.

I feel another urge to do that coming up and I can't help it.

A;.
RE: Losing patience byCleElum13 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
Here a while ago when I realized that the forum had become a media outlet for Garry Owens/LN/handful of followers to abuse everyone, and that no amount of "reporting abuse/1 star rating" would ever change anything as long as the DR defends his rights to abuse the public, I talked to others that I know read/respond to the forum only to find out that I was one of the last to give up reading the forum and responding.
RE: Losing patience byAureliux3 months ago (3 votes) (report abuse)
Nice thing about the present situation with The Cut and Paste Forum Monster?

He's doing a nice job of keeping things in his own world, and isn't particularly bothering anyone in particular. Seems to only want to talk to himself over in that portion of his world, answers comments to his postings in a timely manner, and best of all?

It's keeping him off the streets. At least I hope so.

BUT if he ever decides to take on another foot patrol video capturing hard charging noise ordinance enforcing holy war?

Summer is almost here. We could all politely suggest The Brick parking lot on a Saturday night when there's LOTS of pre-1968 highly modified Harley Jiggelson motorcycles around, preferably covered in interesting dark ages chrome patterns.

Otherwise, though, he really does not bother me and will not keep me out of here. Good weather, The Great Outdoors, camping, kayaking, and bicycling will though. Oh. Fishing? Could be...

And I'm making another pizza tonight.
