Reduce The Risk byCleElum1 January 20, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
There has been a different health concern that most people never thought of, including me, and that's the risks of "let the clean up begin".

I have run into and work with people who have or are working to tear out the carpet, tile, linoleum, and plaster/chalk board walls. This is usually the first steps that need to be done to get rid of the flood damaged interior of homes so that the repairs can take place.

The problem that a lot of folks are having is respiratory and you don't even necessarily have to have a pre-existing condition.

Turns out that even if you don't see mold it can be present or by the time you do see it, you've already been stirring it up and breathing it for quite some time.

Another problem is the other pollutants that are placed in the air whether it's dust/lint, pet dander/hair, chalk dust, carpet fibers, or if in a older home in the upper county it's coal dust or soot that's been in the floors and walls since the 60's and before.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a disease of the lungs in which the airways become narrowed. COPD can be caused by breathing noxious particles in the air. COPD is the 4th leading cause of death in the U.S., and the economic burden of COPD in the U.S. in 2007 was $42.6 billion in health care costs and lost productivity. There is currently no cure for COPD. The prognosis for COPD usually gradually gets worse over time and can lead to death. The rate at which it gets worse varies between individuals.

According to the latest WHO estimates (2007), currently 210 million people have COPD and 3 million people died of COPD in 2005.

There are some things that can be done to minimize exposure. Improving ventilation by opening all windows and doors helps. Placing fans in positions to blow the air from inside the home to outside such as in doorways and window openings. While the use of respirators and dust masks can be uncomfortable to wear while working, it can make all the difference in the world to a lifetime of impaired breathing, financial burdens, and early death.
Moving helps also byClem January 20, 2009 (3 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I tore out some walls in my Cle Elum house and could hardly breathe for a couple of days. The coal dust that slipped down between the oil cloth walls and the ship-lap wall was incredible. I think I used a couple of masks. The walls were bulging out about an inch. Carpets also present the same problem with a smaller amount of dust getting stirred up. I have lousy lungs although I dont consider myself having COPD. Although slightly off topic I am currently in the desert where breathing is relatively easy compared to the NW. Only so much snow shoveling a person can take...lol.
RE: Moving helps also byCleElum1 January 20, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse)
Clem,
You lucky guy. I always wanted to see the deserts and would gladly give up shoveling snow to do so, ha !!!

Was reading about COPD because of some people I work with are now being tested for it after the flood issues. Guess you don't even have to be able to see the air-borne particulates for it to be a problem.

Glad you wore masks. Been wondering where you was, since you haven't been posting.

HEPA Filters byAureliux January 20, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Managed to find one of those big Honeywell HEPA filters at a yard sale once. Had to get a new element for it and that cost almost as much as a whole new unit. But I have one and I run it once in a while. Actually like having it on at night when I'm trying to sleep. Blocks out some of the noise with the way it moves air around.
I have seen them at the donation used goods stores once in a while.

Time to move to E'burg and get in on some of those cooler temp's.

Interesting note on moving to the desert. Thought about it myself but it's too far to drive to work from Vantage.

Everybody have a great day and I'll talk to you later,

Still having some thoughts about going to that. Now I can't find the original post with the info.

Want to post it again? I'm thinking that some of those funds may also be able to be allocated to flood victims.

Sounds like it could turn out to be a real good gig.

Hey, sorry about not being "on". Cascade 1 evidently was bought out by Simplified Technologies a couple of months ago, unbeknownst to me, and yesterday they replaced ISP equipment so I was down. I missed that "memo". This morning they rebooted and went back down, huh??? Now they are back up and running, for now anyway.

Sooooo, how you doing???
RE: CleElum1 byAngel Girl January 23, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse)
Happy to see you are well and doing fine, sorry you are having problems getting on line, that happens from time to time.

Yesterday, the weather in BR was beautiful!!! Our high was 72, winds light and plenty of sunshine (I love days like that!!!) If I had been home, I would have mowed my grass and pulled weeds out of my rose bed.

I haven't asked about JD lately, how is he doing?
RE: Angel Girl byCleElum1 January 23, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse)
Hey my friend,
WOW, 72, that's unreal and Florida is in a freeze at night for days on end with temps. in the 20's. Strange weather everywhere!!!

JD's same-same. No work, sits around wishing he had a job, you know.

Wish they'd get a T1 line up here in the upper county, I hear it's fast.

How about you? How you doing?
RE: CleElum1 byAngel Girl January 23, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse)
Doing well...concerned about my grandson. We "ALL" will be glad when his test's are over and we get the results.

And you...how are you?
RE: Angel Girl byCleElum1 January 23, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse)
I think of your grandson often. I can't imagine going thru what he's going to have done. It would be hard enough for an adult but ...a child. I hope all will come out O.K.

It's good for me to remember lil' ones like him. It helps me to remember that some folk have real troubles if you know what I mean. It helps to keep things in perspective.

I understand your concerns my friend "HOPEFULLY" things will improve.

The economy is effecting my small business as well...people are not going out to eat as frequently as they were, they are staying home, cooking and trying to make their $$$$ go further.

One good way of looking at it is....the families are spending more quality time together by cutting back on spending and staying home and getting to know one another better!!!
RE: CleElum1 byCleElum1 January 23, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse)
I'd like to think that about families but I don't know ... they still manage to go they're own way even without money.

Sorry to hear business is off. Maybe things will ease up soon with more spending money in everybodies pockets. More money for pizza. That's my happy thought for the day !!!!

The Charity Ball Last Night byAureliux January 24, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Was the Million Penny donation concert, understand it was put on by KXLE? I never really did find out who was really behind the drive. Sounded like a great cause, I supported it before Christmas, and they didn't meet their goal so there was a charity ball last night with 5 bands playing, at The Quality Inn in E-burg.

I'd say it was near 100% capacity. Wanted to ask about attendance before I left and see what they thought of how their goals had been met. Didn't find anyone to talk to and I had no idea who was really in charge.

But it was there, it happened, I went, glad I did, people were there to donate and enjoy the music, some danced for a while, and life went on. Looked like a real good crowd and I got around to be introduced a little bit.

Didn't dance, could have I suppose. Perhaps next time.

Anybody reading this want to produce more good background information and history of what is going on, please feel free to post it, OK?

Hope something else like this comes up again soon. I'll go.

We didn't reach our goal of a million pennies. The current total is $7,500. On Friday Jan 23rd KXLE is sponsoring the Charity Ball at the Quality Inn. THE DAVE RAWLINSON BAND
Songwriter Dave Rawlinson with his band has capture in his lyrics and music the sounds and stories we miss about our youth, relationships, and a simpler life. The Dave Rawlinson Band is the embodiment of Baby Boomer Rock & Roll.

Each member has a wealth of talent and experience unique to Pacific Northwest bands. Clearly, this band doesn't reside in a garage, discussing how to play a cover song "exactly right". These guys create their own recipes for great music!

STAR ANNA AND THE LAUGHING DOGS
Locally grown Star Anna and The Laughing Dogs have been rapidly gaining national and international attention since the release of their debut album Crooked Path and the second album is due out this April followed by touring and promotion throughout the summer. Star Anna has recently made the cover of Seattle Sound magazine with alongside Brandi Carlile and other notable northwest singer songwriters. Come check out the Queen of Torch and Twang at this benefit next weekend.

The info. for the Charity Ball has been posted three times in 6 days on here, so I wouldn't feel bad about "a day late, dollar short", ha !!! When I first posted, you asked if anyone else was going and A.G. said:
Aureliux:
You asked if any of us will be attending???? If I could, I would go... I would be the one with a LSU shirt on so you could spot me easily!!! Ha!! Ha!!

Well, what did you wear or do I have a high enough security clearance for that info.?

A.G.,
Hey my southern friend, How's it going?
RE: Charity Ball byAureliux January 24, 2009 (2 votes) (report abuse)
Hi,

Just was able to find the complete full meal deal with the info and everything else. No big deal. Thanks for reminding me and I wouldn't have gone if you hadn't kept up the good posting. I must be slow or something and never put it together that it was KXLE that was doing the Million Penny thing. So I have it all figured out now.

Didn't wear a sport coat, those are still packed up somewhere. Did have my good brown cow boy boots, decent Levis, and a long sleeve dark blue shirt. Wore my brown leather jacket. Sat at the far side near the back up against the wall with a friend of mine and his wife. I did not wear a hat. Did get a new hair cut just for the occasion.

Someone did take my picture last night. No idea where that might end up. If I see it posted I will own up to who I am, I suppose.

I just glad you went and have a good time!

That at the back, up against the wall part makes you sound like some kind of "wall flower". That seems tooo hard to believe. I always had in the back of my mind that you were more out going than that.

I'd like to see the pic that was taken of you. Too bad you can't get a copy of it and post it. Bet you "clean up good"! Everyone on here is sooo afraid to let anyone know what they look like, huh ???
Wall Flower Syndrome byAureliux January 24, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse)
Yeah that's not me, but I'm in an unusual situation that won't be discussed on here. Makes things less than interesting but at least I went and had as much fun as was possible. Had my one margarita and it was good. Bartender had to go find some limes, they hadn't planned on making any, but we got that fixed and it was good. Was reasonable, too.

And I'll go to another one of these things as soon as it comes up.

And the chicken turned out real good, again. Might have to get some of that written down tonight. Will see how it goes.

All is well, can certainly understand that everything had come from good intentions. It's very difficult to define where I am and even harder to properly explain my situation.

So I have a lovely cup of hot pomegranate tea with an added packet of very good instant white Siberian ginseng and life is good!

I'm going to have to wander over to the latest cooking with me forum and explain how I just did the home made winglets in teryaki. Oh those were good, and are now all gone.

Groceries and Cooking Again: byAureliux January 24, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
OK, major score at the store again. Nice big fat tender whole fryers were on sale this week and I'm going to work on three of them tonight. Did two earlier this week and the remains of that culinary adventure are now freezing away so I'll have it later.

Will probably see if I can remember what I'm doing long enough to post the process I go through this time. Should be good.

AND at the other store that I love and adore, I found some really good lamb neck bones AND some more price reduced beef lower shank cuts with the bones in. So soon I'll be making even more delicious and, hopefully, healthful, beef and lamb soup. AND it is even reasonable for cost effectiveness as to price per serving. Which I may try to keep track of as I go along so I can post that info, too!

Stay tuned, cooking and writing is on the way, and I will do my best to get it right so everything works out the way I want.

Should I start a new topic area for cooking ect? If I do, can we keep it in that topic?

Would everyone else like to see an area just for stories? I could start one called something like, "My Literary Attempts to Describe Things I Can't Photograph..."? Or simply, "My Postcards From Off The Edge"?

Suppose we could come up with a discussion as to the why and why not of posting a pic? I know some good people that post on here that use their real names. So why don't we talk about that for a while?

We figured out a way for me to come clean with my age ect. and get that on here. I suppose there might be a way to put up my pic, too.

Can always talk about it whether I get around to doing it or not is another story.

The three of us can't be the only ones reading this forum, how about the rest of you fine readers weighing on on such heavy topics?

And the chicken is cooking, so let me know if you think that I should start a whole new topic area.

I agree, whatever we decide to discuss we "must" stay on the subject.
I'm ok with whatever you decide to debate.

We would have all known our friend CleElum1...I would have walked up to her first...she and I would have had a wonderful time meeting one another!!!!!

"THEN" CleElum1 and I would have walked up to you as you stood there in the back of the room with your cup in hand and we would have introduced ourselves to you.

No doubt you would know me...my LSU shirt would have been a dead give away "OR" I could have worn my Citadel shirt (my son graduated from The Citadel 2001) just to throw you off.
Jobs byCleElum1 January 25, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Just like it's the norm around here for your employer to ask you help at a private party they are having at their own home. That's everything from helping to fix it, packing and transporting to their home, setting up, serving, breaking down, repacking and retransporting back to the restaurant and cleanup. Another employer might ask you to do the exact same thing for a catered event they're being paid to do for a customer. Usually though, either way, the good news is a little something in an envelope for you afterward. I don't expect as much of this going on this year.

I've seen where employer's in the construction or logging industries have expected their people to "come out to the house and help with" or to the shop to work on, usually on the weekends or during shut-down & in-between jobs/sales. Sometimes there's something in an envelope or it can be for nothing extra/gratis, except a thank-you, and in the case of one employer a cold beer.

That's better than a local employer who started a side venture to his regular business. After I worked 130 hrs. in two weeks without a day off and asked for a couple of hours off one afternoon to go to an appointment I had at the clinic was told, "I couldn't be spared". I quit. Another two weeks later the side venture fell on it's face and that was the end of that. He still has the main business but the following year had to lay off everyone who had worked for him for 8 to 15 years to cut labor costs down to the newist hires who were only getting minimum wage, huh ???

How else are employer's to afford that really nice home and sometimes a second home, take those month long vacations once or twice a year, afford the two or three really nice newer vehicles, put in that hot tub, hunting trips out of state, and an huge investment portfolio? That's also how they afford nicer and newer. bigger or better, trucks and equipment.
Whistle-Blowing and Appealing byCleElum1 January 25, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I've only know of a couple of each.

The ones who went to L&I hour and wage division with problems couldn't prove anything, so it became a "he said - he said", that didn't go anywhere.

The other situation was appealing wrongful firings to recieve unemployment. Those both went in favor of the employee's. In the case of the man I know he carried thru with the appeal only to clear his name, but was scared off from filing his weekly claim for unemployment when the unemployment dept. kept hounding him about how it could be considered a felony if he was found to be giving false info. The woman won her appeal and got unemployment but was unable to find work here after that, huh, you think??? She ended up having to move to find work elsewhere.
Work byCleElum1 January 25, 2009 (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Angel Girl,

Hey, my southern friend, sorry to get you all riled up. I'm not in any of the positions that I have brought up. At least not at this moment, anyway. These are just a few of the things I have at one time or another dealt with in some capacity, either as the employee in question or in the case of the driver, as a ride-along who also helped with all the maintenance.

M.C. is soooo correct as to the situation if you even "look" like you have a problem with the situation, then you'd be out of a job and everybody in town would know about it before sundown, seriously. After that any employer who hadn't happened to have heard about "what" happened will certainly hear about it in short order from someone who works for them when you apply for that next job.

Story: When JD and I were just "seeing' each other, him and I were discussing this very thing. I suggested, and then did just mention casually one night at the counter of the local cafe, quietly, to JD, that I was a little "late" with my monthly visitor. Less than 12 hrs later, the very next morning JD's mother came into the very same cafe where him and I were sitting and announced to the JD(and the world), "Don't you knock this woman up". Of course we thought it was pretty funny, but she didn't see the humor in it until we explained what we had done and maybe not even then.

I'm working for a huge corporation now where there are rules, and then, there are the unspoken rules, and of course, let us not forget the invisible "special" rules for "special" people who are only "special" here at work and no where else in the world are they "special".
Treatment byCleElum1 January 25, 2009 (3 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
A. G.,

I understand perfectly how you feel and how it sounds when I describe what goes on in the employee/employer relationship of a small town.

When I first moved to a small town of less than 2,000 people, having come from a city of 80,000 or more (at that time) I too thought like you. In the big city, there are rules State and Federal, and recourse if something isn't "right".

Then there's the you can always just go down the road and get another job where every block(and there are soooo many blocks) needs someone to do something. Lots of jobs abound.

In a town that is only 12 blocks long and every business is located along 10 of those blocks, life is different. You learn and adjust your thinking, fore-warned is fore-armed, if anybody is looking for a job in a small town of less than 2000 people.

Hi, Good Morning to you too! Ingredient questions are fine, no problem there. I should be on again this evening after work.

Try to be as complete as possible when I write about how I do things but I know I can skip over important steps if I'm not careful. Have been doing things too long and everything is automatic.

It was actually kind of funny with my two sons, before they left home. They practically chained me down in the kitchen, and made me fix things in front of them while they both took notes at different times so they could preserve some of my methods and creations.

Was totally different when my daughter got older. She just kicked everyone else out of the kitchen, took over, fixed what she wanted and I would get a grocery list of what I'd better get or else. I don't think I cooked or did anything in the kitchen for almost 3 years.

More Pictures on the way byAureliux January 28, 2009 (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
BUT here's a story for you... All nice and quiet with no one around up in one of those perfect secluded little private areas that I get into once in a while...
Yesterday morning in fact, just about the time the light of the sun gets all the way up. Was a good sunrise too, just didn't catch it with the camera.
So there's a couple inches of brand new powder dry snow on the ground and a lot of the older stuff hiding in the shadows where it can still be all slippery and treacherous.
I set the brakes, and hike up a long tall twisty driveway to see if I need to chain up. Was OK, so I walk back down.
What do I see in the snow, fresh, which wasn't there when I walked up? Cougar tracks right across the road in front of my truck. They were almost the size of saucers. I must have JUST missed seeing it.
Got right back in my truck and looked around but never saw it.
Did try to get a pic of a big bull elk that was laying down watching me for a while. No idea if that turned out or not, will have to see if it's worth uploading.

Good Morning CleElum1 and Aureliux byAngel Girl January 29, 2009 (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I purchased the movie "Fireproof" and watched it last night, it is one of the best movies I have seen in a "LONG" time!!!!

I recommend it highly... if you cant't decide which DVD to rent please, consider this one. It is a movie the entire family can watch without the fear of violence and sex (which is rare these days)

It has turned cold here in BR and the forcast calls for rising temp's beginning today.

I hope you all have a great day.

And a good mornin' to you too,

How cold is it?

Meatloaf today,eh?

It's some what warmer but windy today.
RE: Good Morning CleElum1 and Aureliux byAngel Girl January 29, 2009 (2 votes) (report abuse)
Hey my friend!!! It is 42 this morning and should get close to 60 by this afternoon.

We will serve Chicken and Sausage Gumbo over rice...pizza and salad today.

They had to reschedule my grandson's appointment???? Have no idea why or when??? Hope to find out later.
RE: Good Morning CleElum1 and Aureliux byCleElum1 January 29, 2009 (2 votes) (report abuse)
Must be a day off on the menu? I still got meatloaf on the brain.

TVP - textured vegie protein

Keep me up on when the appointment is, please.

Love chicken gumbo as long as it's "not" tooo hot, and that a subjective thing. I checked your temp's., hard to believe how it varies from day to day. One day 50's and the next 30's, huh???

The wind is making it cold here right now. It's 30 degrees and that's better than it has been.
Cajun Weather byAngel Girl January 29, 2009 (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Only in Louisiana do you get roller coaster temp's!!!! I'm sure this is the reason so many people are sick!!!

I hope I don't catch it!

Deeda was telling me yesterday about the winds and how cold it was in Ellensburg Brrr!!!

How are you CleElum1?
RE: Cajun Weather byCleElum1 January 29, 2009 (2 votes) (report abuse)
Yah, you never know what temp your going to wake-up to. Must be hard to adjust the thermostat?

Hope you don't get sick either. It was bad enough the last time around for you when you were sick!

I'm hanging in there. I work tonight, tomorrow night, and Sat. night.
Next week I "might" get a shift, don't know. Then, the week after I'll get a whole week in - 40 hrs.

One of the guys I work with fell on the ice and shattered his elbow, so he'll be off 6 to 8 weeks. Myself and another guy who's layed off will be splitting the injured guys time.
RE: Cajun Weather byAngel Girl January 29, 2009 (2 votes) (report abuse)
I am sorry too hear of his injury but, pleased you get the opportunity to get some hours!!!

I should go so I can get my day started....have a blessed day my friend.

Again...please keep the movie I mentioned in mind, it trully "IS" a great movie for couples.

Catch you later!!!

Accident east of Cle Elum yesterday byMC February 05, 2009 (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Anyone have news? It was a head-on accident on the east side of the 970/I-90 ramps yesterday morning that probably happened around 8:30AM. It looked pretty bad.
Angel Girl byCleElum1 February 05, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)

I'm O.K. JD's napping.

RE: CleElum1 byAngel Girl February 05, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse)
I agree...it is a deal!!!!

I do serve dessert pizza,we have cinnamon sticks...cherry cheescake(as well as peach and blueberry)

I have not spoken with my daughter today, I plan on phoning her later today and ask.

How is JD doing?
RE: Angel Girl byCleElum1 February 05, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse)
Luv dessert pizza!!! Probably a good thing you don't have a store here or I'd have a bigger problem w/weight.

Ever have white chocolate cheesecake?

He's O.K. but like so many, he wishes he had a job.

How about you???
RE: CleElum1 byAngel Girl February 05, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse)
I have never tried white chocolate cheesecake "but" I am willing to try! Ha!!!

I will keep you and JD in my prayers for work!!! I can only imagine how he must feel.

I thank God each day for what little I have (I wish I could help you my friend)

Have you had time to watch the film I recommended?
RE: Angel Girl byCleElum1 February 05, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse)
No, but I haven't forgot. It's just that I'll have to fore go watching movies for awhile.

JD is hoping to get on with some contacts he made when he was working at the Wild Horse wind project. Some of the same people will be doing an expansion to it as well as two other proposed wind projects here locally. So ... here's hoping????

I get to work a full week next week for the guy who shattered his elbow. That's good for me?????

How are you holding up???? Your honey still on the job that will end next month? Was that in March or was it this month?

How about you?
RE: Good Afternoon CleElum1 byAngel Girl February 07, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse)
Thank God we were busy today!!!! I made what seems like 100 pizza's today...normally Saturday's are slow (customers sleep in and do not begin ordering until late in the day!) we were busy from the time we opened until I left(3:00 PM)

I really felt we would be slow with all the parades being held.
RE: Good Afternoon CleElum1 byCleElum1 February 07, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse)
O.K., ... I'll bite, ha. What parades?

Glad to hear you had a really good business day. Keep that up and maybe it won't be long till someone buys you out and you move up here. Just a happy thought !?!
RE: Good Afternoon CleElum1 byAngel Girl February 07, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse)
I would "LOVE" it if I could relocate to your part of the world!!! Washington State is sooooo beautiful!

The parades are in honor of "Black History Month."

Good Morning Aureliux:

Are you finding picture post card moments????
RE: Post Card Moments byAureliux February 12, 2009 (2 votes) (report abuse)
Hi, yes. Was up wandering around Snoqualmie Pass most of the day yesterday. Did take a few pics while I was there. Interesting conditions, cool looking ground fog swirling around and the peaks had some decent contrast. Have not looked at what I got yet but while I was there, it was once again, drop dead gorgeous.

Anyone see that little wounded koala bear in Oz sharing the firefighter's bottle of water? It held his hand while it drank away. Incredible shot! Don't have time to stuff the link in, must go be productive and employed.

Talk to you later,

A.
RE: Post Card Moments byAngel Girl February 12, 2009 (1 votes) (report abuse)
You are "REALLY" making me want to jump a flight to Washington and set on top of Snoqualmie Pass and take in the view!!!!

Love your part of the USA!!!
