Hey Clem,
I got into a few conversations with a few people about the airport improvements. This is what I've learned from a variety of sources.
The airport was in such bad shape it could no longer be used safely. The grant that was used for the repairs was a grant that had been applied for every year for roughly the last 15 yrs and had finally been approved of because it had come down to a point of either fix the airport or shut it down for good. The grant is very specific and with expenditure oversight. FAA would do more than frown at using any of the money for any other projects.
There are currently 5 hangers with full time year round occupancy and a waiting list of a dozen others who would like to rent hangers.
Then, there's the need of an airport to encourage growth, as well as promote and advance further developement of the area.
At one time TrendWest had planned to place a runway on resort property but was unable to do so because of the location of the ridges and the way the ridges run. There are homeowners as we speak who own and operate helicopters/airplanes with a need for an airport. There is a need for an airport for those who fly in for the day to golf. Both the resort homeownesr and those who fly in for the day are revenue generating factors for our local economy as these folks dine out and shop for antiques.
From a Washington State Depart. of Transportation Aviation Division PDF:
On an annual basis, Cle Elum Municipal Airport’s tenants and its visitors in Kittitas County, Washington contribute the following total annual economic benefit: $734,027.00
This number represents the sum total of direct, indirect, and induced amounts for jobs(employment), labor earnings(payroll), and economic(sales output).
In conclusion, in my most humble opinion it was definitely needed, well spent, and long over-due.

I read the PDF report it read like a piece of fiction as far as jobs created and take off and landings at the airport. Its possible sometime in the future the airport might justify some portion of the expenditure but that remains to be seen. The City was able to get the money because of lax federal oversight on the way money is spent from the aviation fuel tax. Still the City of Cle Elum had to come up with $77,000 of general fund expenditures. It was a classic case of Pork Barrel spending although unlike Alaska's Bridge to Nowhere this simply used taxes from another source.
The Airport was rebuilt with the backdrop of general aviation being dead. The Bellevue airfield disappeared years ago and it was a very busy place.
I have heard in the past that their was a demand for extra hangar space but that remains to be seen whether the demand will be there. The City should probably lease or sell off space around the airport and let private entities build and sell/lease hangar space. I would consider the airport a success if only 20 planes a week landed at the airport and the people went to Suncadia. I think that might be somewhere in the distant future.
The Equestrian Park will have at least 20x the impact on the communtity as the airport will. I would rather see money spent in that direction rather than the airfield. The airfield still could become a white elephant with the city saddled with maintenance cost. The City failed to maintain the airport in the past and I question whether they will in the future.

Clem,
I absolutely agree with you that the horse park would be of more benefit to more people, especially since there are more people involved with horses than flying around here. How much is that going to cost CE?
That being said, I also believe that having a quality airport is what takes us a little further from the "podunk" category than a horse park does.

Thank you for the info, CE1. Yes Clem the Bellevue airfield disappeared a long time ago, then the Issaquah airfield did also. I may be wrong but I believe the costs ($$$, noise, property tax, ect) got to be way more than they could ever make as a viable airport. The land was worth much more for hotels and strip malls than an airport.
I don't know if the money spent on our airport was a good investment or not, I imagine time will tell. But if it was a use it or lose it deal regarding the money and it had to be used for aviation, I hope it is better spent here than a tiny airport in Alabama or somewhere......

The only reason I am not totally bent out of shape on the Airport is because of Suncadia. Suncadia built the water treatment plant here in town, upgrade the sewer pipes and built a brand new state of the art sewage plant. The water in town was heavily chlorinated where it was almost like swimming pool water. The water situation had gotten bad to the point that the water had a lot of dissolved "grey material" in it. In other words this community owes quite a bit to Suncadia. The upgrade of the Airport is a good way to pay Suncadia back for what its done for the people in town.
Still I think the Feds need to look at the way they are spending the aviation fuel tax. It also remains to be seen how people will get in to Suncadia. I have seen more helicopters than planes so far as the airport is some distance from Suncadia.

Actually the water treatment plant was as much or more of a benefit to Suncadia as CE. The resort wouldn't exist without one. It became most conducive for the resort to go in "partners" with CE for the water plant with each doing their part - shared cost and CE ability to get govt. funds for the project. A "win - win" for both sides but not free to either side.
As for transportation from airport to the resort Suncadia already runs several shuttles buses right now for an array of reasons ranging from drunks bar hopping to Sea-Tac travelers and everything in between. Besides the buses they have a fleet of Denali's, Yukons, Excursions, Tahoes, and Escalades that are use to transport people. Sometimes for such good reasons as run to the mini mart in the middle of the night to get munchies for the "smoke and toke" crowd. Truth being stranger than fiction.

Breaking news: Avalanche, flooding danger peaks in Upper Kittitas County
"We are cautioning all winter recreationists in the backcountry to totally avoid any area that's prone to avalanches, or even looks like it could present an avalanche danger," Slyfield said. This includes snowmobilers, snowboarders, snowshoers, cross-country skiers and others using the backcountry.
Slyfield said it's possible that some low-lying areas next to the Cle Elum, Teanaway and Yakima rivers and its tributaries will flood, including Elk Meadows and Elk Meadows Park west of Cle Elum. He asks residents of areas prone to flooding to prepare their properties and take precautions including being ready to evacuate if called upon.
Those seeing flood situations developing that threaten roads, homes and other property are asked to call the Sheriff's Office through 9-1-1.

It will end up being a pretty big deal and Suncadia should benefit nicely from the Horse Park. I am not close to the horse scene at all in Washington but a lot of the people who are involved in the competitions that will take place at the horse park have a lot of money and will typically have professional trainers transport, train and take care of the horses while they stay in nearby hotels. Depending on how big the competitions are we could be drawing people from all over the west coast. Local people will certainly be involved with the Horse Park but I think you will see a completely different crowd than you would see at the Ellensburg Rodeo.

Hey My Best Internet Friend,
I'm O.K. but at 7:30 this morning when I came home from work it was a different world and has been changing by the minute every since. Part of the road I travel to get home from town is now posted "local traffic only" as a "River Runs Thru It" in several places that only a tall standing 4X should try to go.
The only family I have is two aunts on the west side in Lewis Co. where the last time they had this problem was Feb. 96' and I was there for it. It looks like it will be just as bad or worse even this time around. Last time there was 8 feet of water and people were rescued by boat from the second story of a motel just blocks from one of my aunts, because the water level was level the the second story balcony of the motel. I'm worried about her and am charging my phone in hopes of calling her soon, of course the phone is dead when you need it most, huh !?!
Power went out here for a short time and we're all electric. Hope it doesn't happen again.

PORT ANGELES, Wash. — A few days into the new year, I stood outside the house and stared into the darkness of a deep winter night at this far western edge of America – defiant on a bone-chilling eve.
It felt lonely and hypnotic here on the Olympic Peninsula, where a jut of land the size of Massachusetts holds an immensity of snow, surrounded on three sides by unknowable depths of gunmetal-gray salt water.
At this northern location, at a latitude equal to Newfoundland, it’s hard not to feel the seasonal blues in all their smothering inevitability. Because there were no big-city lights on the horizon, and clouds veiled a thin moon, the darkness had a particularly strong grip.
I wanted to get inside by the fire, to drink something strong, to eat something sweet, to find a bear’s den of deep sleep. If you live in the north, in places where the sun is an unreliable companion for many months, you can’t escape the urge to hide and hoard in winter.
Heres a link to the rest.

O.K. Dokay,
It's all good as long as we don't lose power we've fine. Warm, dry, and fed, better than some. My aunt that I worried about in Centralia/Lewis county packed up the pets, meds, and husband, then went to the other aunts place. The second aunt is next to a creek that still has to raise another 5 feet before it floods there. So guess it's all good for them, too.
You do what you gotta do when it comes to the help. Obviously, she didn't care about you or her job !!!!

I was going to go out Hwy 10 on the road bike but when I got to the intersection it was blocked. I decided to head up towards Mineral Springs which was also "closed" except local traffic. I flatted twice-hitting rocks along the shoulder.
I didnt allow enough time but the weather was "relatively" warm and the road was clear enough that a ride to Blewett would have been possible. Ordinarily it would be a tough ride on a road bike in the middle of winter.
Teanaway was still running high but Swauk Creek was back in its banks. I would think Blewett will be open tomorrow. I am guessing water and debris over the road was the main issue.

The north side of Blewett was damaged much worse than the south side, the northbound lane was completely washed out 3 miles south of the big Y. And farther up Ruby creek washed the shoulder away. Here are a few pictures of the damage.

I hope to interview a few applicants this week, I will be very careful as to I hire.
I have plenty of applications "BUT" it will take someone special to pass the test with me...I am looking for someone who can best represent my establishment...afterall, the cashier/hostess is the first person customers see when they walk in "and" he/she "must" make a good impression.
As I said, I rather do it myself and know it is done right rather than, hire someone out of desperation and hope they do a good job.
Sure you don't want to come down and fill out an app????

Oye', I hope you find the right person to cashier/hostess, but you would be better served to place someone like me in the way, way, back of the kitchen with little or no contact with the public, ha !!!
The personality traits that helps a person do my job really well doesn't transfer to other occupations with much success. There are lots of people I've known or run into who have exactly what you need and you should already have lots of them in that stack of app's. you have. It just takes you making the time that your already short on to go thru them and find the right person.

No pictures. I'm a little sensitive about disasters ect. and I've spent a lot of time out there working in it. Have been through a few too many hard times on my own so I know what it's like and there appears to be enough other people with cameras so I have let them have all the glory.
ISP came back up sometime yesterday afternoon after a long break. Big surge after the power outage cooked several of the servers and now they are replaced.
Throughout this past trial by flooding I've seen some of the best examples of team work and neighborly dedication and caring attitudes! And I've also had to have a ring side seat on some real selfish "ME FIRST" attitudes from people that weren't affected by the problems others faced. It has been a very interesting experience that I will not forget. AND I could actually name some names of some people that would have liked to cause more problems! But I won't.
I did see the truck that was going door to door handing out those boxes of emergency supplies from the red cross. I did see the shock and weariness of the cold and wet recipients. Just in case anyone needs to be reminded, this was a real disaster.
Some very bad things happened to some really good people and they will not be recovering from it real soon. I had a chance to speak to some of them that had flood insurance. No one knows when the checks will arrive. SO far no one I've talked to has any coverage for contents. The structure of their house is covered, but the floor coverings such as carpeting ect. may not be.
If anyone is interested in contributing, here is one that will work. All the funds will go to Hope Source:
If you would like to contribute to the Fund, please send a check to "Kittitas GOP Relief Fund" to PO Box 1621, Ellensburg, Wa 98926."
Pretty sure that information was posted somewhere else in the forum.
Glad the weather has been cooperating lately. Able to get around better and do my job.

Hey how's my hard workin' friend?
Cold, how cold is it? Seen on the nightly news where so much of the country from Montana to the eastern seaboard to Texas is in a deep freeze.
Seems like your in earlier tonight than usual or is it just me???
Did you catch back in the posts where A. said he's o.k., just off line - ISP id down.

Hello My Friend
I decided to take the evening off, I left the store in good hands.
It is suppose to drop down to the low 20's tonight...that is cold for us.
I am watching American Idol as we speak "my favorite program", do you ever watch it?

I see where so folks are having the -20 to -50 going on. Now that's beyond cold. You should enjoy that 20 degree stuff tonight. Might even have to "think" about putting on a pair of long-pants, ha !!!
No, can't say that I've ever seen American Idol. The t.v. is almost always on but more for noise than anything. Right now I don't have a "fav" show.

As a matter of fact..I do own a pair of long johns and I plan on wearing them tommorow.
Should I have some delivery's to the job sites I will need them, the wind is alway's blowing making it "COLDER"
Just finished cooking a pot of chili??? My husband will really appreciate it tomorrow when the wind is blowing and the temp's stuggle to make it out to the 40's
How are things in your area, I haven't spoken to my daughter in a few days so I have no idea how the weather is.

Sorry for the delay in responding, you won't believe me but I was on a biscuit w/sorgum and Lipton's break.
Actually, I was just thinking long pants, not even long johns since you like shorts. But your right about delivery and the wind chill factor, brrrr!!!
You finish as in ate or made? I'm just kidding, I know you meant you made a pot of chili. Any cornbread?
It's been warm and sunny. 40's for temps. and just a little breezy, not bad at all. Made me long for spring.

Hello Again:
I thought I would share a version of Peach Cobbler that is popular around here....
1 (21 oz) peach pie filling(any fruit will work)
1 stick butter (unsalted)
1 cup self-rising flour
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
Melt butter in oven proof dish and set aside (keep warm)
Mix flour...sugar...and milk together and pour over melted butter.
Pour fruit into the middle of the flour mixture (DO NOT STIR)
Bake at 350 for about 30-45 minutes depending on your oven or until flour mixture is golden brown.
Very good!!! I'm sure the recipe has made it's way to CleElum "BUT" just in case it hasn't I thought I would share it with you.

I love peach cobbler. All last week I had time to make one comfort stop Saturday night late. Went to the Cottage and they actually had some. Got it hot with ice cream.
Your recipe doesn't call for a drop or two of lemon juice in the peach filling? That kind of gives it a little bit of a flavor bang when I make it.
Off to work I go, must keep the county warm and the heat on!

I wear my long johns when the temp gets 20 degrees or lower...I deliver to job sites and for some reason, the wind blows harder making the wind chill 10 degrees colder!!!!
I have to tell you, when it is this cold.... I make better tips!!!! I guess my customers appreciate my braving the elements to deliver them a hot meal.
Have a good day everyone.

SO how about another round of, "What's for Dinner?" I get the fake veg burger mix at the health food store in E-burg and their unflavored TVP. Then I do something like a 2/1 mix of water with some of the other in varied quantities and I didn't measure again tonight. Did some dried onions and fresh ground garlic though.
Microwaved it for 30 seconds the 1st time, gave it a stir with a fork, then zapped it for another minute. Now it's setting around doing a cool down.
Once it's cool enough I'm going to stir in a couple eggs so it holds together better. And I'll fry it around in some hot peanut oil. Mainly because that is all I have to fry with right now except for my sesame fire oil. And I'll put some of that in just before it's done.
I really love the frozen veggie burgers but they cost too much. Even the Costco ones are too high for me. So I am always working on making my own. And they usually turn out fine. And even if they don't I eat it anyway.
Have thrown in a can of salmon and that is good. Kind of like salmon fritters then.
And I've melted cheese on them too.
Kind of hard to mess them up too much. Get too distracted writing and letting them burn is about the only way I've ever totally ruined a batch.
But the way I fix them I figure it's less than half the cost of getting raw ground beef. No idea how the nutrition really works out but I am declaring that it's good enough for me. And it's great to have around when there isn't a whole heckuva lot else going on.
Really glad so many like iced tea! I really get in to that a lot, too. If any of us can ever get together some time, please remind me to bring some. I have been alternating between oolong, jasmine, and green. Need to get over to the other side of the hill and score another bag of Yunan bonay. And I really miss having my Indian black assam which is the espresso of all tea and is the richest most highly flavored black tea in the world. I haven't had any typical American style orange pekoe tea in years.
Anybody besides me ever try the Korean twig tea? I finished all mine up, thought it was pretty good but haven't got more yet.
Need to think up a veg or two to go with my other fine creation.
Off I go to kitchen duty but I'll check back in again tonight.
A.
