I'd like to get together with you when you come up and visit E'burg. Just let me know when the time comes. As for sitting on our front porch, that will be a tough one since we don't have a porch. Front or back. We rent a piece of do-do mobile home in a run down trailor court. I see my share of critters, but thats up to them as to when and where. Tried to set up an appointment with them for a photo op once, but they stood me up, ha. I think maybe Aureliux is the one who lives out by himself surrounded by nature from the looks of his beautiful pictures. I would still like to buy you that cup of coffee.

Rest easy my friend even though I don't talk about religion, I know I have never been completely alone

Anybody else heard about the trampling at Walmart on black Fri. and are as astonished as me. I can't believe how anybody can act as these people did!!!
The Trampling byAureliux November 30, 2008 (3 votes) (report abuse)
That was pretty bad. Along with the two that shot each other in another town at a toy store.

I fail to see much of the "Spirit" in those that get themselves whipped into a crazed lathered frenzy for this time of the year.

Gets to the place where I can't even stand to be around people like that in the store.

Still do like the, Peace on Earth Good Will to all saying. And for now, I will not be visiting any big stores until after the 25th of December thing is over.

It's a sad day when people are so heartless and trample someone over a material object.I am wondering if the individuals who did that feel any remorse???

I have ne desire to take part in the madness. I had much rather pay full price than to put up with rude people.(It's people like that, that take the fun out of Christmas)

I know me...I would have stopped to help and taken the chance of being ran over myself...what about you???
RE: Walmart byCleElum1 November 30, 2008 (1 votes) (report abuse)
Angel Girl,
There's nothing I could even begin to want sooo much, even for free, that I could ever hurt someone else just so I could have it. By the same token, I could not pass by someone who's hurting like in a situation such as this and do nothing to help them. Thats the part of this that I don't get, even if you aren't the one who caused the problem, how could you just walk on by and not help the person that went down.

It's not just the people who caused this person to go down but every last single person who came after that who did nothing to help the fallen person. This was "not my finest moment" for alot people that day.
MATERIALISM!!! bySith November 30, 2008 (3 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
MATERIALISM! So bad! We should celebrate the real reason for the season which is celebrating Hanukah, Christmas, Bodhi Day, Kwannza, Ramadan, Divali, Pagan, Gala, Solstice, not just giving gifts and presents! Spend time with family and friends, not the mall or Wal-Mart! HAPPY HOLIDAYS! :)
RE: MATERIALISM!!! byhippie girl 5 November 30, 2008 (2 votes) (report abuse)
It's too bad that Christmas has gone from being with family to capitalism! Everyone fighting to get the best of the best at such a "good deal."

I worry that incidences like this will worsen as the economy worsens. Its times like now where we all should come together and help each other(not trample each other).
Yes, byAureliux November 30, 2008 (1 votes) (report abuse)
I like the come together idea. Peace is good whenever it can be achieved.

Anyone remember that clever little saying that popped up years ago, about doing random anonymous acts of kindness?

Or how about that neat one liner that goes, "Always do good!"

Along with acts of kindness and peace there is also mercy, forgiveness, long suffering...

C'mon somebody, help me fill out the list!

Then there's the book that I have never read but always looked interesting and I think it's title goes like this, "Everything I needed to know in life, I should have learned in kindergarden"

Think I once saw the same idea with a big list of how to live right which all came from the original Star Trek series.

So the ideas are there, we are here, what would we like to do that WILL make a difference?

Suppose we could round each other up and have a winter holiday peace march for good sense peace, and tranquility one of these days.

BUT while I'm waiting on that call, I still kind of like looking for every opportunity to exercise my options regarding random, anonymous acts of kindness.

A.
RE: MATERIALISM!!! byhippie girl 5 November 30, 2008 (1 votes) (report abuse)
Do you mean random act of kindness? The other day, I had a customer randomly pay for a stranger's meal. It made my day! I wished this happened more often.

Pay it forward, maybe? Do something nice for one person, and that person does a nice deed for another, ect., ect...

I like your winter peace march! I'm in!!!

Good Morning CleElum1

Natchez launched a new web site today...thought you would be interested!!!!!!

www.natchezontheriver.com

My 2 favorites (1) "Historic Homes" if you place your pointer
on each home it will give you a little history
on each.(Longwood is my favorite)

(2)"Architectural Treasures" Read about The Turning
Angel on the Natchez Cemetery web site

Greg Isles an author, is from Natchez.. he has written several novels (all of which I own) I bought my daughter and I both a copy of "The Turning Angel" a very good read!!!

She and I had fun guessing the locations Greg wrote about!!!It's pretty cool reading a book that is describing your home town and places you frequent!!!

If any of you check out the Natchez link, "please" let me know your thoughts.

Have a good day

Nice site. It's reads like Gone With the Wind. I can hardly imagine seeing places like that with my own eyes, I'd be awestruck. I'm so glad that there are places where history is preserved.
Hi CleElum1 byAngel Girl November 30, 2008 (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I thought you would enjoy that!!!

When you click to "Historic Homes" place your pointer on The Monmouth Plantation and visit their web site.

www.monmouthplantation.com

I have a funny story about The Monmouth...the owners were doing some landscaping and found an OLD cannonball that dated back to the civil war...they called the bombsquad to check it out...it had never exploded.

My daughter had some photo's taken on the grounds of The Monmouth in her can-can dress...we participated in the Natchez Spring Pilgramage one year and her part was doing the can-can...red lacy bloomers and all!!!!HA!!!(I still have her red ostrich feather.)

Did you ever watch the mini series North and South many years ago??? It was all filmed in Natchez..Patrick Swazee was in Natchez for a while and may I say, He IS CUTE!!!

How does everyone feel about the Holiday lights on the buildings in historic downtown??

I love that it is a festive activity for the residents but do ya think the city could shell out a couple bucks and replace the out bulbs in the strings??
RE: here's my card byCleElum1 November 30, 2008 (1 votes) (report abuse)
I love festive holiday lighting. It to me is apart of all the little things that help people get "in the holiday mood". Replacing bulbs when needed is the least of what a city can do to do their part during the holiday season, in my opinion.
RE: here's my card bygorilla in the room December 03, 2008 (0 votes) (report abuse)
CleElum1...It was more to the point that the out bulbs make the downtown area look shabby which turns many people off to shopping. Most visitors to a town look for bright lights and colorful displays. That's what grabs attention and brings people into stores.

My apologies of I was vague with my previous statement.
RE: here's my card byCleElum1 December 03, 2008 (0 votes) (report abuse)
gorilla in the room,

Your right, the lights being out do make the downtown area look shabby(and run-down for that matter) and are a turn-off to shopping, hence, the reason I said the lights are what helps put people in the holiday mood. Part of what makes a holiday mood in today consumerism society is shopping. As one way to help promote a town the city council and chamber of commerce should make it their business to help ensure that the lights be replaced when needed. No need to apologize to me for being vague, I just don't tend to elaborate my thoughts in great detail.
Re:MATERIALISM!!! byAlbert November 30, 2008 (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I haven't read or heard all the reports on the incident where the person was trampled but I can't help but feel there were a lot of people who wanted to help but couldn't. I'm trying to put myself in the same situation as the other shoppers. When those doors opened, hundreds of bodies were pushed forward and if you were right in the middle of this mass of pushing shoving bodies you physically had no choice but to go along with the flow of bodies. If someone fell directly in front of you, you wouldn't physically be able to stop the flow of bodies around and behind you so you could stop and help that person. The many people behind you wouldn't be immediately aware that someone has fallen so they just keep pushing because the people behind them are pushing. It would take a few minutes for the flow of bodies to be aware that someone in their path has fallen and the flow can be stopped. I'm guessing the shoppers who were involved in this persons death are not feeling good about it.

The stores need to stop having these Black Friday sales. Secondly, shoppers need to stop going to these types of sales.
Tramplings 'R Not Us byAureliux November 30, 2008 (2 votes) (report abuse)
Like I needed one more reason to NEVER shop at Walmart? Think it was 1997 or '98 when I went into the one in Auburn for a few things at this same interesting time of the year.

Had seen a good expose on their bait and switch price tactics on TV so I thought that had been taken care of.

Picked up some things that had a really good price, according to the sign on the shelf stating the special bargain. Got up to the register and WAS CHARGED MORE THAN DOUBLE the advertised sale price.

I complained and did not reach for my wallet. I'm really calm, quiet, and polite all the time. Never attempt to appear threatening and I really hate these kinds of confrontations.

SO HERE COMES THE MANAGEMENT SQUAD and they tried the full court press to get me to just pay the charges and move on. THEY raised THEIR voices and tried to get the other shoppers in line behind me involved in my business. I offered to take them all back to show them the listed sale prices on the shelves. Two of them broke off from the herd and scampered back to do the switch. JUST like I had seen on TV!

They tried to be really good with their fake dominating psuedo-management process. It didn't work with me. I ended up leaving everything right there and left. But I told them that I had seen this same act reported on TV and that I was going to see what I could do about it.

And I've NEVER been back to Walmart. IF it was the last job I could find on earth, I MAY have to work in one some day. But you can be most assured, when the doors open for their wonderful AM Cattle Call Sales, I will be smart enough NOT to stand in front of the frenzied stampeding herd when the doors get flung open.

I'm SO sorry someone died like this during the holidays. There's no excuse that I can see from any direction. I learned not to push and shove before I was 5 years old. I cross at crosswalks, fasten my seat belt, and obey traffic safety laws.

No idea what else to say. I have waited in line at Costco a few times this time of year when it opens and I have never seen people go nutts where someone could get hurt. And this sure as heck never happens at Nordstroms.

I saw the moon and planets last night just after sunset just above South Cle Elum Ridge. A little hazy and I was thinking that would be very impressive in the desert sw. The moon coming up just before the sun a couple of days earlier was impressive. It looks like clouds for tonight.

The weather has been much warmer than normal for this time of year. Yesterday it got up to 51 in Cle Elum. The last time I remember a warm spell like this after Thanksgiving was 2001 when I went out and mowed the lawn in December. The 7 day outlook doesnt show any snow at all.

I have made my own noodles years ago and your right its not hard. Seems like flour, an egg, little water and oil, mix, roll out thin and slice with a kitchen knife. Drop one at a time into pan of whatever your adding it to when the pans contents are boiling. Just as good as store bought but I think it was rather difficult for me to get it as thin as store bought and still hold together.

Noodle Making byAureliux December 01, 2008 (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I can't pull it up out of my head right now how it's done BUT once upon a time I made these big home made noodles and I think they were called Spaetzel. Rolled out and hand cut, set aside for a while.

Made some kind of a white creamy white sauce that had green peas and pearl onions in it.

Seems like I then cooked the spaetzel JUST right, did the drain, strain, rinse and drain routine with a little bit of a cooking oil toss to keep it loose, then served it under the white sauce and vegetables.

That kind of noodle is very expensive to buy. But not too hard to make. Some kinds of noodle/pasta dough does require a different kind of flour. Which I can get at Cash 'N Carry.

Which reminds me, they also have a very special high protein white unbleached bread flour that makes dynamite French bread.

AND they also have the special variety for making pizza crusts.

Hi,
Sorry about the delay in answering. Cascade 1 is a shameful service for internet here in the upper county. I asked before laying out a $ about streaming media, ideo, audio, up-loading, down-loading, side-loading ... whatever and of course I have trouble even getting on and/or out, much less doing any onf the things I asked about. which should be the lest of it when you pay for a service, but anyway, huh!?! I can actually go to town, park blocks away from an unsecured system, hook up, and get better service. Go figure.

The pic of the house is one in town that I took last year and thought I post to start up and give out some of the x-mas spirit. Thought also that when the time comes I'd take one for this year to compare with last year, since the same people live there and see if things change. A before and after pic from last year to this one.

The deer are from where I work, which is a resort of 16,000 odd acres or so. I'm surrounded by nature of sorts, as you can see, but quite a bit of it is developed for and by the ultra-rich. The rich are animals of a different nature all together. Ha!

I worked those 4 days. Three nights of the four there was a herd of roughly 150 to 200 head of elk in a particular spot, so on night 4, I thought you know, I really should take my camera since I might not get to work again for some time. Needless to say, that night the resort had had a big event. A x-mas tree lighting with 360 or so people in attendance from what I hear, I came on after the event. And of course the elk had moved out because of all the commotion and traffic.

I believe I missed my calling...I should have been a vet so I could work with animals.

Your desription of your job sounds interesting!!!

Hi,
My days going O.K.. How about you?

The job itself is boring most of the time. The people I work with and for add more drama than I can deal with at times. And as it is a corporate entity that I work for as well as the homeowners, who ultimately are paying for the services of my dept., there in no shortage of stress or bosses.

The only time things get interesting is when there's a speeding issue, medical issue, fire alarm, buglar alarm, unwanted person issue, drunk issue, domestic violence issue, theft issue, weapons issue, drug issue, ... I don't know what-ever-else issue ...

JD was the picture taker in the family. I've only had a camera since last x-mas. Its just an inexpensive digital that I bought for myself as a x-mas gift to me.

Don't worry about your spelling. The brain fills in the missing/misspelled or whatevers needed. I've only has a pc for 2 yrs. and am a lousy speller/typist. I did a good job of flunking 3 quarters of typing in high school, way back when.

Cascade1 the only benefit byClem December 02, 2008 (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Internet service here in Cle Elum is something like everyone else had about 7 years ago. There is little or no competition between the internet service providers. Ellenburg has ClearWire which I think is where WIFI is going. Clearwire for $30 a month offers speeds at twice what I think Cascade and Inland can offer . Cascade1 though has let me discontine service and restart without any charges which might be their best benefit. If anybody has Clearwire post up and tell us about the service.

I switched to qwest broadband about 4 months ago, and I love it. They are running a promotion right now for internet service. Take a look if you are interested:

Hey Clem,

What is Clearwire? Is that the name of the provider or is it the name of the type of system? Do you know if it like Cascade 1 in that it uses on outside dish-like thing-ama-bob with a radio?
Clearwire is GREAT byAureliux December 02, 2008 (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Last time I checked it was not available in our county. Takes a special modem but runs a signal through the regular electic wires instead of phone or TV cables.

When I lived in Cle Elum I had an ISP through Netriver.Com BUT I'm not sure if they offer the ADSL/DSL package so you can get decent connectivity.

Aureliux,
Thanks for the info. Wish it was up and running here, I'm ready for anything better than what I have at a comparable price. We don't have a hard phone so I would need a stand alone system. Please, let me know if you come across any new info., thanks again.
RE: Clearwire is GREAT byAureliux December 03, 2008 (1 votes) (report abuse)
Last night I put Clearwire.Com in the browser bar, and up came their site. Put in my zip code and e-mail address, and found that it is now available in E-burg.
Looks like the best bang for the buck is a 2 year contract.
If I'm not mistaken, Netriver took over all the old Computer Central services EXCEPT for inside Ellensburg.
Connectivity issues, ISP providers, and new technology are all kind of news interests to me so I followed Clearwire along the road from when it was first proposed. As far as I can tell, in my so humble opinion, it's the best thing going. I have not tried it. Right now I'm piggy backed into a real good high speed dedicated network that is one of the best I've ever tried, for this sort of thing.
Did notice that Clearwire ALSO had a real good wireless offer. Looked to be less expensive than anyone else and I didn't see a limit on how much you could use it per month.
And in addition to that they also had a package that included voice.

So check it out if you like. If I could have remembered my old zip code from Cle Elum last night I would have checked to see if it was available up there.

The above article was from todays Seattle Times. Clearwire uses cell phone towers to broadcast their signals. That might be part of the reason that Cle Elum is not in their service area. Although there is one tower in Cle Elum I am on Verizon and the signal is very poor here. The two towers that cover Cle Elum are probably in Easton and Elk Heights. Great for freeway travelers but not too good for Cle Elum.

Clem,
We're on Cingular and it's no better. There's times we couldn't talk to each other when we were 2 blocks away.
RE: More on Clearwire byMC December 02, 2008 (2 votes) (report abuse)
I'd have to do more research on ClearWire to say anything about it.

You can get either Qwest DSL or R&R cable internet in Cle Elum, which would no doubt be the most reliable if not the cheapest. If you wanted something to travel with as you turn cranks for a couple months in a milder climate, maybe look at Verizon's air card... just had someone today say they had it east of town and they are very impressed with the speeds.

ANY wireless service is subject to invisible crudding up via interference from a wide variety of sources, which is impossible for the provider to control and a nightmare to trouble shoot. It is best suited for rural areas where no other options exist since urban settings are 'dirtier' RF-wise.

High speed internet in rural areas is a huge issue. It doesn't help that a corporate behemoth like Qwest controls most of upper county phones... they demonstrably have ZERO interest in solving the problem for little dots on their map like us. Note that in the Inland and Fairpoint (used to be EllTel) areas DSL has been pushed out to most of their phone customers. I don't know if it's possible for a rural area to revolt and hand their phone service over to a different company- or heck, create a new one- but it seems like Qwest has given more than enough cause.
RE: More on Clearwire byMC December 02, 2008 (1 votes) (report abuse)
P.S. I'm on AT&T, and I can talk even inside the old brick buildings in downtown Cle Elum and Roslyn no problem. Historically they've had the best coverage out here and eastward through the Basin.

Isn't it the way of America though to be able to post our "freedom of expression" or however you wish to put it...If I can put up a Christmas tree, my neighbors put their menorrah (spelling?) in a window, why can't an athiest put up a sign? Let them believe whatever they want. As long as they don't knock on my door to try to convert me...I leave them alone.
Our Rights and my Belief byAureliux December 03, 2008 (1 votes) (report abuse)
My belief's are not threatened by an atheist poster or any other display that I may not agree with.

Welcome to America! There are MANY who are not with us because they FOUGHT and died for what we should all believe in, and that, among other things, is The Constitution of the United States of America.

If someone wants to be an atheist, well, I'll say, "God Bless them". I used to be one.

Be nice to one another, always do good, please perform a random act of kindness today, and let's look out for each other, OK?

Onward and Upward Always,

Snorkus,
Sorry, I ran your bell. Had the same behavior been exhibited towards atheists, I would had thought the same, but since that is not the case, then, that is not the subject I was remarking about. Actually, the subject is about atheists bashing christians with a sign at the rotundra. So, in your opinion, what do you think atheists will bash next? Is it skin color as you have suggested?

General info:

Interesting tech/financial adventures:

From the latter link: "Clearwire’s current network is based on a proprietary technology developed by Motorola, rather than WiMAX. Sprint’s XOHM network is based on WiMAX and will eventually account for 70 percent of the merged network."

WiMax would seem like a very reasonable 'last-mile' solution in our area. But I would be a little wary about jumping on board with this particular company since there's a potentially deadly combination of factors that has in technology-past left customers holding the bag:
- investor hoop-jumping during a recession
- very long service contracts
- some history of difficulty terminating said contracts.. smells a little of AOL there, although hopefully they've cleaned up their act
- proprietary gear... locks them into expensive maintenance and switching out requires even more $$$$$$$ for a system-wide overhaul right when they could be hurting for cash. Even worse, the company they're locked in with is Motorola, which is flirting with death:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorola#Finances

So... as always, "caveat emptor".

Having said that, if anyone local gives Clearwire a whirl I'd be interested to know what the price, speed, and reliability they get.

Over the top ... ??? To me that is what it is and more, it smacks of hate speech, is hostile, and derogatory. That's only my opinion.

The sign says there is no god or heaven, only the natural world. It also criticizes religion, saying it "hardens hearts and enslaves minds."

Hate speech:
is a term for speech intended to degrade, intimidate, or incite violence or prejudicial action against a person or group of people based on their race, gender, age, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, language ability, ideology, social class, occupation, appearance (height, weight, hair color, etc.), mental capacity, and any other distinction that might be considered by some as a liability. By the way, I would feel the same way had the sign been speaking about atheists in the same manner. This sign is not how you show your respect for anybody.

No matter how bad my day is going, there are a lot of people out there having a worse time.

I can still look everyone in the eye, wish them well, and smile. And it works.

If life was easy, anyone could do it, and then we'd all be working for minimum wage.

All days are good, some are just better than others.

If you really, really think you are having a bad day, just see what happens once you miss one, you'll never come back!

If wishes were horses, poor men would ride.

If you are up the proverbial polluted estuary in a canoe but do not have a paddle, you may consider several options:

Get out and portage.

Find a shallow spot, abandon ship, and walk home.

Go to shore, get a pole the right length, tie on your shoes, and make your own paddle.

And the last, but certainly not the least? Stay off that kind of water and always carry a spare paddle and a cell phone.

How about this one?

"Critics are many, friends are few, always paddle your own canoe."
